While we're still yet to get confirmation as to this year's game, it seems interesting wrinkles are happening internally at Activision's Call of Duty development studios as to the future of the Call of Duty schedule after claims that Treyarch are now set to be behind next year's installment.

Up until recently, the development of Call of Duty games was essentially set up to be handled between three teams working on an alternating schedule: Infinity Ward (who are making this year's as yet unannounced-but-rumoured-to-be-MW4 game) one year, Sledgehammer and Raven for 2020 and then back to Treyarch for their follow up to Black Ops 4 in 2021.

However, according to a report from sources given to Kotaku, 'tensions' between Raven and Sledgehammer have seen their project shelved and instead the studios have been reassigned to working as support studios for Treyarch's offering. The work the former two studios has done so far on their game will, according to the report, be rolled into the single player campaign for what is said to be Black Ops 5, which will please those players who decried the lack of campaign in BO4.

Kotaku also notes that this does mean Treyarch will now only have two years to make their game as opposed to the usual three year cycle they were previously working with, and the game will also be cross-generational, likely to co-incide with the next PlayStation and Xbox console launches expected to arrive at that time.

There's currently no comment from Activision on any of this at the moment, so we'll just have to wait and see. Before all of that – crikey – we still have to find out what's happening with this year's edition, and we suspect we'll hear more on that very soon.
