Destiny 2 finally came to the PC yesterday, but the launch hasn’t gone as smooth as fans were hoping. According to multiple posts on the Destiny 2 PC subreddit, many players have apparently been banned for using third-party software such as Discord, Fraps and Mumble while playing.
Players have been reporting that they are receiving bans for using software like Fraps to capture gameplay footage, and also for using programs like Discord and Mumble to communicate with others while playing a game.
The developer has responded and refuted these claims with Destiny 2’s PC project lead, David Shaw, saying that, ‘We do block programs from pushing their code into our game. Most overlays work like that. We don’t ban for that tho. That’s internet BS.’
Destiny 2’s support has also clarified that this isn’t the case, and Bungie community manager, Cozmo, has said that third-party apps like Discord, Mumble and Fraps aren’t compatible and may cause performance issues, but won’t result in bans.
Earlier this year Bungie had warned that it was going to block certain third-party applications in order to avoid malicious code being inserted into the Destiny 2 game client, and reduce cheating opportunities.
It’s not yet clear exactly what is going on, and those who’ve been banned (inadvertently or otherwise) will have to wait to find out what exactly is happening.
