Bungie, developer of the Halo series, has claimed that the ‘MADDIE, WHERE ARE YOU?’ reference found in the new new Halo 3 Campaign Experience trailer, released yesterday afternoon, is an “unfortunate and untended coincidence”.

Posting in the official Bungie.net forums, Bungie writer Luke Smith, aka lukems, said: “As always, all of the characters in our games are fictional. Any similarities between real life and the characters in our games are purely coincidental.

“That said, this is both an unfortunate and untended coincidence.”

And Bungie’s community lead Brian Jarrard, aka Sketchfactor, has posted on the Halo.Bungie.Org forums backing up the coincidence claim, saying: “This is an unfortunate coincidence but there is no connection between Bungie’s game and the tragic disappearance of that little girl.”

We’ve contacted Microsoft for official comment on the matter and hope to get clarification soon, but these posts from Bungie staffers would suggest Maddie is in fact a character due to appear in the new campaign experience and that players may be charged with finding her, rather than a direct comment on disappearance of five year-old Madeleine McCann.

We’ll have more on this rapidly changing story soon.
