David Bytheway, a 22-year-old from Wolves, has been a pro since the age of 17 and has now signed with Bundesliga club Wolfsburg, but he won’t be stepping onto the pitch in real life. He’s one of two professional FIFA players on the club’s books, brought on because of the rise in popularity of eSports.

Bytheway has represented England at the FIFA Interactive World Cup, and has been all over the word to compete. He’ll now wear Wolfsburg gear when he competes and streams online.

“It’s absolutely massive for me the fact that a team like Wolfsburg have gotten involved with gaming,” Bytheway told BBC’s newsbeat.

“It was just something I was doing at home to start with, just playing my friends and wanting to be the best out of them, and all of a sudden I’m a part of a football club.”

Although employed by Wolfsburg, Bytheway doesn’t see the need to put in the same level of training that the on the pitch pros must endure.

“I wouldn’t call it a training schedule, but I always try to get in at least four to six games in a day.”

He says “you don’t want to play too many people because then you give away your secrets. So you stick between one or two and then you have to wait for them to come online”.
