Gearbox’s Borderlands 4 is set to be a more difficult experience than its predecessors. While Borderlands 2 had a great difficulty balance, other games in the series have been significantly easier.

In a recent interview, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford explained that the next game in the series has been designed as a significantly harder challenge, but will it pay off? Well, that’s what Gearbox is most worried about.

Borderlands 4 is the hardest game yet

Speaking to Insider Gaming at Gamescom, Pitchford explained that the team “definitely have pushed the challenges quite a lot, especially with bosses and boss fight mechanics” to make a harder overall experience.

However, while Borderlands does have a very active core community that grinds loot and plays True Vault Hunter mode, the series is also beloved by casual gamers. With this in mind, Pitchford is worried that the harder challenge may push some people away.

“We have lots of players that actually aren’t interested in deep, hard challenges; lots of people that love just exploring the Borderlands or spending time with the characters,” the Gearbox boss explained.

“I’m a little nervous because there are points of Borderlands 4 that are more challenging,” he continued. “But one of the coolest things about Borderlands 4, because of the nature of the RPG, is if anything is a little challenging for you, you can just grind somewhere and level up and become more powerful.”

The ability to grind obviously isn’t changing, Gearbox hasn’t completely changed genres. In fact, Pitchford explains that the satisfaction that “things that were hard when you were a little chump will become trivial when you become a badass” is still core to the experience.

Nevertheless, Borderlands 4 will have harder bosses than most games in the series. In fact, in all my time with the series, I haven’t really struggled with a boss on the base difficulty. For me, more interesting mechanics sound incredibly interesting (could we be seeing Destiny-like raids for bosses?), and time will tell if it pays off.
