BlizzPlanet reports that Blizzard has filed three trademarks relating to Cataclysm, with the details of each trademark seemingly pointing to a new game or game related service/platform.

According to BlizzPlanet, fans believe Cataclysm is the next World of Warcraft expansion, to be announced at BlizzCon 2009 in August. The name is said to match perfectly with the theme of the Sundering, an event that happened ten thousand years ago in Azeroth.

BlizzPlanet notes: “A permanent scar of such cataclysm is known as the Maelstrom. Event that happened when the Well of Eternity imploded when Queen Azshara and her Highborne failed to open a portal to allow the entry of Sargeras and the Burning Legion into Azeroth. If Cataclysm is the next expansion that might mean the South Seas theme is underway.”

There’s also been some talk that Cataclysm is to be the actual name for Blizzard’s Battle.net 2.0 gaming platform.
