Blizzard has said all current retailer listings for a Diablo III release date are simply guesses.

This follows the discovery of a promotional display in Best Buy, Rochester, Minnesota, which stated a February 1, 2012 release date alongside a countdown timer. UK retailer Gameplay supports the US date by listing a February 3 launch.

However, it turns out that the Best Buy signage was made in house without the support of Blizzard. In fact, Blizzard says retailers worldwide haven’t been informed of the Diablo III release date.

“Retailers will not know a date until it’s officially announced through a press release,” explained Blizzard community manager Micah “Bashiok” Whipple via Twitter.

“Diablo III does not have a release date. Any store or person claiming otherwise is guessing.”

Last we heard Blizzard was aiming for an early 2012 launch for Diablo III, meaning February would fit quite nicely. Blizzard hasn’t denied that the game will launch February 1, simply denying that it has revealed this information to retailers.
