Blizzard has announced its upcoming Battle.net feature BattleTag, which connects players across all Blizzard titles with a screen name as opposed to their own full name.
This is seemingly Blizzard’s response to the privacy issues that left users concerned over using Real ID to make connections with strangers.
BattleTag will have access to all grouping and queuing features Real ID users can currently access.
Additionally it will be used as your forum handle on Blizzard community websites. While handles are not unique, users will have an identification number which will appear after their name on their profile.
BattleTags will be optional, however, and players will still be able to post on forums with their World of Warcraft characters or StarCraft II account.
Finally, Blizzard has stated this will soon be available in the Diablo beta.
After the furore Real ID caused amongst users this seems like a legitimately reasonable alternative. However Blizzard is still emphasising BattleTags won’t replace Real ID, and simply function as a separate feature.
