Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is almost upon us, with the shooter coming to current-gen consoles and PC later this month. While the CoD community is thrilled to see the series return to its roots, with a thrilling campaign and usual multiplayer shenanigans, the game can’t seem to beat anime fighter Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero.
Black Ops 6 has already launched some multiplayer betas to give players a taste of how the game plays, leading to mixed results. Some fans call it the best CoD game they’ve played in a long time, while others are worried about decisions like emotes changing to third person. Activision Blizzard has listened to the constructive criticism and plans to address them before the shooter’s release.
All of this makes it even more surprising that the latest Dragon Ball game is crushing Black Ops 6 in pre-order sales. However, this could be less about Call of Duty’s state and more about fan excitement for another Budokai Tenkaichi game. With both games coming out this month, a spotlight on these communities will be bigger than ever.
Dragon Ball beats Black Ops 6 in PlayStation pre-orders
User DrLove shared the top PlayStation pre-orders on Twitter, celebrating Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero’s surprise victory over Black Ops 6. All three editions of the anime arena fighter are on top, outselling the Cross-Gen Bundle and Vault Editions of Activision’s shooter. Sparking Zero also beats Monster Hunter: Wilds in pre-orders, another big AAA multiplayer game fans are passionate about.
A loss for CoD, or a win for Dragon Ball?
This has less to do with a lack of quality in Black Ops 6 and more with anticipation for another Budokai Tenkaichi game. The Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi games are pretty beloved by anime fans, allowing them to recreate some of the anime’s explosive battles in huge arenas and spectacular attacks. No other anime game can capture that magic, outside of the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm games from CyberConnect2.
Quote tweets from fans show how big a deal it is for a Dragon Ball game to compete with a new CoD game in sales, let alone beat them. SLOplays tweeted: “Do you realize how insane this is for an anime game?” “I don’t think y’all understand just how crazy this is, I truly hope this makes Bandai Namco TRULY put more effort into anime games now,” chimed TrickzKamikaze.
Call of Duty fans shouldn’t worry since there’s still plenty to love about the upcoming Black Ops 6. There’s a spy thriller campaign mode that looks salivating, especially after the poor reception to Modern Warfare 3’s story. Zombies are also returning, with new maps for the mode recently leaked by dataminers.
