BioWare Montreal spent four months working on a Mass Effect first-person shooter, but the idea eventually morphed into the cooperative mode found in the recently released Mass Effect 3, ‘The Final Hours of Mass Effect 3’ app created by gaming journalist Geoff Keighley has revealed.

“The goal was simple,” Keighley reports in the app, “to create a standalone multiplayer experience in the Mass Effect universe that would mix the play styles of Unreal Tournament and Battlefield 1943 – and likely be released as a downloadable game.”

After four months in development the game was presented as Mass Effect Team Assault in March 2010 and was positively received by the BioWare bosses. However, the idea morphed into the cooperative mode found in Mass Effect 3.

The Final Hours of Mass Effect 3 is available from iTunes priced $2.99.
