BioWare founders Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka find the idea of a Mass Effect MMO daunting but interesting.
Speaking in an interview with The PA Report, both BioWare doctors agreed that the possibility of bringing the Mass Effect universe to the MMO genre isn’t ruled out.
“The implication of a Mass Effect MMO has so many expectations. We already bit off a big thing to chew with a Star Wars MMO, and that’s not so small,” said Zeschuk.
“It’s daunting, but the neat thing is it would lend itself to a different type of game play. It’s fun to think about. It’s really interesting, I don’t know. It’s a tough one.”
Muzyka added the world of Mass Effect is big enough to support the genre.
“When you deliver a game, and you deliver it for a player, you have to capture what they think is the possibility space.
“You need to let them do everything they think they should do, and you can’t block them from doing anything they think they should be able to do. You have to nail all the features and content that should be in that possibility space. Mass Effect is a big possibility space.”
With Mass Effect 3 said to be the final chapter in the Shepard saga, an MMO offers an alternative method of continuing the universe.
Both doctors have previously teased the MMO potential of the franchise, Zeschuk stating:
“It’s one of the nice things about having these properties in our back pocket… If we want to use something we own as a source for a game, it’s easy to do. So yeah, you never know. We’ve got this giant product to launch, but once that’s done we’ll consider next steps.”
Mass Effect 3 arrives March 9.
