BioShock, you know, that game set in the underwater city of Rapture, began life as something completely different.
Speaking to CVG, senior designer Joe McDonagh said that an early version of the game was set on a tropical island populated with Nazis.
“Every studio has its own dynamic, but we believe that original games require a lot of iteration and sudden changes of direction,” said McDonagh. “It can be terrifying and ageing at times. But it’s impossible to sit down at the start of a project and say this game will be XYZ and it will be fun.“
BioShock isn’t the first and won’t be the last to dramatically change direction; Bungie’s Halo franchise began life as a Mac RTS and we all know how that ended up.
