You’ve probably already seen videos of Mulaka floating around without realising. The 3D action adventure game was recently confirmed as coming to the Switch as well as PC, PS4 and Xbox, and it’s got an arresting and colourful visual style that gets it noticed. Developer Lienzo has today launched a new video series that delves more into the indigenous Mexican culture that inspired the game, that of the Tarahumara.

Mulaka is set in northern Mexico, and sees you play as a Tarahumara Sukurúame, or shaman, who is fighting back dark forces that are corrupting the land. Many of the challenges and enemies you face are drawn from Tarahumara culture, and the video series aims to help the viewer ‘better understand the traditions and beliefs of the Tarahumara peoples, given their roles in Mulaka’s development and, ultimately, gameplay.’

The first video is named The Tarahumara Culture, and gives an introduction into the Tarahumara people and their history. In particular, the Tarahumara are renowned for their almost supernatural running ability, and in the video Tarahumara runner Anselmo Juárez explains, ‘We don’t train. This is how we run.’ It’s definitely worth a watch.

Mulaka, which is out on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch next year, is based on areas of Mexico that have a lot of significance for the Tarahumara, and the devs are hoping to share their culture with the world.
