Electronic Arts has confirmed that Battlefield V failed to meet its sales expectations, despite the fact the game shifted 7.3 million copies during the quarter ended December 31, 2018.

CFO Blake Jorgensen told investors during the publishing giant's third quarter results that it had targeted closer to 8.3 for the World War II shooter. Furthermore, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said that delaying the game from October to November didn't do Battlefield V any favours.

'Unfortunately, the later release date meant the game launched deeper into a competitive holiday window where heavy price discounting was a big factor,' he said (via GI.biz). 'In addition, we also made the decision to prioritise other features, including a single-player experience at launch, over a battle royale mode.

'This year, battle royale modes became incredibly popular in shooter games. As a result of these decisions, we struggled to gain momentum and we did not met our sales expectations for the quarter.'

Battlefield V's battle royale mode, known as Firestorm, won't be released until March, and the game arrived with a couple of features missing on release.

Despite this, VideoGamer still thought it was a pretty decent shooter at the time. Keep an eye out for Combined Arms, which launches next week.
