Battlefield 3 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will run at a sub HD resolution, DICE rendering architect Johan Andersson has confirmed.

“bf3 is 1280×704 on both PS3 and 360,” Tweeted Andersson. “Removing a few lines from 720p saves good perf & memory for us.”

He added: “We have tiny 8 pixel black bars that often is invisible due to overscan, scaling would just ruin the picture.”

Overnight EA confirmed it won’t be charging for Battlefield 3’s Battlelog.

Battlefield 3 will be released October 28 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

A few lines missing form the vertical resolution isn’t going to be noticeable, especially when the image isn’t being scaled up. It’s also worth remembering that there are plenty of console titles which don’t run at 720p – even FPS giants Call of Duty: Black Ops and the Halo games are sub HD.
