Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling has played down the intense rivalry between fans of Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, claiming “it’s what games have been forever”.
“Any game that has two very different audiences, you’re going to see it,” Bowling told Kotaku. “Every game has its passionate userbase. We see it from everybody.”
He added: “I wouldn’t say it’s annoying. It’s what it is. It’s what games have been forever.”
In contrast to the ongoing war of words between rival fans, Bowling says much of the fan feedback – even the harsh stuff – is vital for the ongoing improvement of the franchise.
“We may have the number one selling game,” he said. “We may have, at times, the number one most played game. So it’s very easy to sit back and say. ‘We’ve done our jobs perfectly. We have the best game ever created. Look at the numbers.’ But then you can get online and have people kick dirt in your face constantly every day about anything that they may not like about the game. It allows you to have a gut check and a perspective that this is where we still need to go. This is work that we still need to do.”
Infinity Ward recently revealed that Modern Warfare 2’s Party Chat restrictions would be lifted across many of Modern Warfare 3’s modes and that the studio had recruited glitch-hunting experts mapMonkeys to fly over to Los Angeles and spend a week trying to squash bugs.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be released for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on November 8.
