EA has announced that Battlefield 2 has sold more than 1.2M copies worldwide. The Battlefield franchise, developed by Digital Illusions, has now sold in excess of 7.2M copies worldwide.

The Battlefield franchise has proven to be a phenomenal hit with audiences worldwide,” said Jonathan Bunney, Vice President Product Marketing at EA Europe. “As the sequel to one of the best loved PC action games of all time, Battlefield 2 was one of the most anticipated games of the year. Even in the face of high expectations, the game delivered on the promise of the series and raises the quality bar for future titles in the category.”

The first expansion pack for Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2: Special Forces, is due for release later this year. Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is also due this year for PlayStation 2 and Xbox.
