News website Bloomberg is reporting that Japanese giants Bandai and Namco are to merge. Bandai will buy Namco for 175.3 billion yen ($1.7 billion). 6.3 percent of Namco was bought for 10.5 billion yen and each Namco shareholder will receive 1 share each in the new combined company.

This merger should help both companies compete in the increasingly hostile and expensive videogames market. The two companies will combine on September 29th 2005 under the name Namco Bandai Holdings, and will be led by Bandai President Takeo Takasu and Namco Vice Chairman Kyushiro Takagi.

No details on how the merger will affect current projects has been revealed, but expect at least some of Bandai’s bigger characters to receive some better videogame treatment.
