BioWare’s beard-stroking, Dungeons and Dragons powered 90s PC RPG Baldur’s Gate is undergoing a fancy facelift for 2012.

Overhaul Games, a division of Beamdog that includes ex-BioWare staff who worked on the original game, is handling development. Atari will be publishing the game in summer 2012.

Beamdog were quick to state that this was more than a simple HD update of the original, with additional content. “This is the Enhanced Edition,” said a representative to Joystiq. “It’s not a repackage. We have the original source code and are doing a significant update.”

The games “will feature a re-forged version of the Infinity Engine with a variety of modern improvements,” says the Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition website.

Last year Beamdog worked on publishing a HD version of cult classic MDK 2.

No platforms were announced, but I imagine you can expect a PC version at the very least.
