A Baldur’s Gate 3 player gained the courage to leave their abusive partner after falling for Gale in Larian’s RPG.

In a post on Reddit, one Baldur’s Gate 3 player explained how the game was the “silent killer” of a three-and-a-half-year relationship. While some would assume this was a bad thing, the Redditor revealed that the game gave them the strength to leave an abusive partner.

In the Reddit post, user swimitabyss explains that she quickly fell in love with Larian’s RPG despite its “foreign gameplay mechanics”. Due to the game’s amazingly in-depth characters, the player quickly became attached to the in-game wizard companion, Gale.

“I had no intentions of “romancing” anyone…until Gale showed me how to channel the Weave,” the Redditor said.

Over their gameplay, the player developed a “genuine intimacy and attachment” to Gale, and began to question her sanity. Additionally, their real-world partner was the opposite of their fantasy attachment, attacking them with “physical violence… and manipulation”.

“Each time I mustered the to courage to stand up for myself, the night would end with my things scattered and broken around the house and bruises on my skin the next morning,” they explained. “After work, all I could think about was escaping into the warm embrace of my fictional companion and living vicariously through my Tav,”

While the Redditor is aware that their Baldur’s Gate 3 relationship wasn’t real, it gave them the courage to finally leave their abusive situation. “[It was] real enough to make me realize that I do deserve someone who looks at me with nothing but love and compassion. Real enough to show me that I’m worthy of someone who is gentle and kind,” they said.

Another Playthrough

Afterwards, the Redditor decided to start a new Baldur’s Gate 3 playthrough. However, this time they aren’t pining after the gentle Gale, but instead the handsome vampire Astarion, This time, the Redditor has found a new connection with Astarion’s abusive past resonating with them in a deeply emotional way.

“I started a new Durge play through romancing Astarion, and the similarities between my old relationship and his with Cazador have shaken me to my core,” they explained. “I’ve never resonated with someone so deeply in nearly every way. It’s been pure cathartic release.”
