Larian Studios has implemented a surprise restriction to the console version of Baldur’s Gate 3 that doesn’t affect the game’s PC version. After implementing mod support for the game on console with Patch 7, players now have a limit on how many mods they’ll be allowed to install on PS5 and Xbox Series.
Baldur’s Gate 3 gets mod limit
As players discovered massive crashes and extreme loading times in Baldur’s Gate 3, developer Larian realised that mod lists exceeding 100 mods can have massive ramifications on the game. While only affecting a few players, Larian has stopped console players from installing more than 100 mods at a time.
In a statement to fans, Larian explained that there are a “handful” of players that have installed more than 100 mods on console. However, the developer is introducing a “100-mod limit for console platforms” as Xbox and PlayStation struggle to handle extreme mod lists.
“Now that there are more than 100 mods available to download on console, we need to have a serious chat,” Larian said. “Who plays with more than 100 mods in a single save you might ask? Well, as it turns out, there’s a handful of you.
“Unlike PC, consoles can only juggle so many files at once. The more mods you have installed, the quicker this file limit is reached. Now that some of you have been trying to play with more than 100 mods, you’ve been letting us know that you’re experiencing slow loading times or even game crashes.”
Unfortunately, players who have more than 100 mods on their current save file will find themselves unable to access their save for the time being. However, Larian is planning a fix that will allow save files with more than 100 mods to be restored.
The 100-mod limit will be in place on console for the foreseeable future. There’s currently no public plan to find a way to bring back more mods on Xbox and PlayStation but, if we’re honest, who can be mad at that? (Probably someone.)
