The new improved GBA will be released as Graphite and Pearl Blue versions on September 19th in the US, with all future GBAs that are manufactured also featuring the improved backlit screen. A Nintendo spokesperson said: “The SP’s screen is now comparable to that of the GB Micro in terms of clarity and sharpness.“
This new and improved screen will not come at any extra cost because the technology has now come down in price enough to make backlit screens affordable. No date has been set for a European debut for the new backlit GBA, but rest assured that they are coming.
What it does mean is that this is the fourth GBA model to be released by Nintendo: The original ‘I can’t see the screen’ model, the SP, the Micro and now the improved screen SP. I suppose you could argue that Nintendo have just continuously worked to give consumers a better product, but for the crazed fans who must buy every hardware version (don’t forget the million colour variations that are available for each version) the GBA has proved to be rather expensive.
