Indie Metroidvania Axiom Verge 2 has launched on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC, as revealed by developer Tom Happ.

The surprise came as part of Nintendo’s Indie World Showcase last night. Though a sequel to the original 2015 action adventure, Happ says you can play the games in any order. Playing as Indra, you’ll head to Antarctica following the call of a mysterious voice. Upon discovering an alternate Earth like world, you’ll find yourself exploring the ruins of a lost civilisation.

The game boasts a huge interconnected map and any and every enemy can be hacked. You’ve also got a support drone you can use that has its own abilities and behaviours. The game also includes a Speedrun Mode to encourage you to beat the levels as fast as you can.

Axiom Verge 2 was first announced back in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch and the PS4 and PC versions were revealed later. We were quite fond of the original game, with Tom Orry scoring it a 9 in his review. He said “Whereas many modern takes on classic retro genres fall foul of style over substance, this has been built with such skill that it doesn’t need to rely on our annoying fondness of the past to impress.”

Check out the trailer for the game below. Axiom Verge 2 is available now on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC and a PlayStation 5 version is coming soon.
