Recently is was announced that Test Drive Unlimited for the Xbox 360 would retail for $39.95, considerably lower than the usual price for an Xbox 360 title. It was also revealed that the game would not carry the same low price point in Europe, instead retailing for the usual £49.99 (around $90).

Speaking to Eurogamer, an Atari rep has offered a reason for the huge price difference, stating that the “price in the US reflects the local Xbox 360 market situation.” The rep went on to say: “Additionally the US has a significantly larger Xbox 360 installed base, with a much bigger Xbox Live Gold membership.

Presumably the larger Xbox Live community will encourage greater sales of additional Car Packs which Atari will be releasing each month. While this could be argued to be sound thinking on Atari’s part, it can only further discourage UK gamers from purchasing the downloadable content that we’re apparently not keen on.

Test Drive Unlimited is scheduled for release for the Xbox 360 in September, with PlayStation 2, PC and PSP versions to follow in October.
