Recently announced spin-off Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, from UK studio Climax, is the first in a potential new series, Assassin’s Creed Unity creative director Alex Amancio told Eurogamer.

The China game stars Shao Jun, who first appeared in a novelization of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and in the animated epilogue for the game.

“We really liked the side-scrolling idea, like Mark of the Ninja, and we thought it would be a really great way to explore some of the other universes we’ve created,” explained Amancio.

Amancio added that the game’s visuals will change to reflect the era in which the action takes place.

“One thing that’s really cool is that every one of the chapters of this game will be in the art style representative of that era in time. This is why Shao Jun’s game is like Chinese ink – very black and red.

“Once we have other characters and timeframes the art style will completely change to match that specific character.”

As for which characters will be utilised in future Chronicles titles, Amancio wasn’t saying, but said “the idea is that we have this rich universe – we’re going to use it”.

It’s unclear how future Chronicles titles will be released. The China game is included in the AC Unity Season Pass.
