A new Assassin’s Creed title will release between April 1, 2013 and March 31, 2014, Ubisoft has announced.

The next game in the hit open-world franchise will introduce an “all-new Assassin’s Creed hero” and be set in a new time period, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemott confirmed last night, promising another “major leap forward” for the series.

“We are delighted and proud to announce today that in financial year ’14, we will introduce an all-new Assassin’s Creed hero, within an all new team and time period, and we expect it to be another major leap forward for the franchise,” said Guillemott.

“It is the benefit of multiple teams working on multiple chapters of the product, each getting several years to make their versions of an Assassin’s Creed game.”

Guillemott’s comments suggest that the series will be stepping away from the American Revolution setting introduced in last year’s Assassin’s Creed 3, and replacing Native American lead Connor with a new lead.

But where could the series be headed? Victorian London, as was once speculated, or out onto the ocean waves and into pirate territory?

Expect more to be revealed in the coming months.
