The PS3’s Sixaxis controller was revealed back in May during Sony Computer Entertainment’s pre-E3 press conference. Phil Harrison shocked the audience by revealing that the controller features tilt sensors, not wildly dissimilar to the Wii Remote and Nunchuck.
Despite the hoo-ha surrounding the announcement, very few titles offer any meaningful use of the functionality. However, EA is hoping to provide gamers will a worthwhile use of the controller with the release of Army of Two.
According to the latest issue of US gaming magazine PSM, EA Montreal is planning some neat tilt sensing functionality. An example is when characters use a mortar. “One character can shoot a probe into the air giving them a bird’s eye view of the land,” PSM explains. “Using the tilt function, you can aim a reticule of sorts over any target, guiding the mortar’s shot to any target.“
The magazine also says that the tilt functionality will be used to determine how steady the character’s aim is when using a sniper rifle.
Army of Two is currently in development for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and is scheduled for release between April 2007 and March 2008.
