Following from last week’s news that Apple will be moving to Intel platforms for their Apple Mac systems, a number of game developers have spoken about the benefits this brings. With the majority of games optimised for the Windows/x86 platform it has meant porting games to the Mac has been a problem in the past. The news that Macs will now be using Intel chips should be good news all round. InsideMacGames.com has a number of comments from game developers, each expressing their opinion on Apple Computer’s move to Intel.
Ryan Gordon, Epic Games says, “From a game development (rather, a game porting) viewpoint, this will be a huge win once we get the majority of users over to these systems, both in terms of developer expertise and end-user performance.“
Brad Oliver, Aspyr Media offers a differing view point. “I’m in total shock right now. It sure sounds like this new Mac is going to be x86-based rather than a different Intel chip. If so, it’s hard for me to see that porting companies will have much to offer once the inevitable Win32 virtual machines get released.“
It seems the IBM to Intel switch will be good news for game developers, but could spell the end for companies relying on producing ports for the Mac platform. For the full article and more reaction from developers head over to InsideMacGames.com.
