A new survey by US polling firm Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, has revealed that Blu-Ray is the format currently being favoured by consumers. Participants were asked to take into account factors such as support from technology and film companies, game console support, capacity, movie title availability and launch dates. Of the two formats in the survey, Blu-Ray received 58 percent with only 16 percent of the 1200 participants rating HD-DVD as their format of choice.
Reasons given for the popularity of Blu-Ray were the greater range of supporting devices, including set-top players, games consoles (PlayStation 3) and PCs, and the higher storage capacity the format offers over HD-DVD.
“While we are still in the pre-launch phase for both formats, Blu-Ray is the early front runner,” said Mark Penn of PSB. “Consumers perceive Blu-Ray as the favourite on technology company support, gaming, storage and disc lifestyle.”
Sony’s Blu-Ray format has support from Sharp, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips and Mitsubishi, along with PC mega powers Dell and Hewlett Packard. HD-DVD is backed by Toshiba and was recently strengthened by a partnership with Microsoft, with the possibility of future versions of the Xbox 360 including an HD-DVD drive.
Maureen Weber, general manager of HP’s Optical Storage Solutions Business had this to say about the survey: “From day one, we’ve focused on delivering the best possible consumer experience while building support from the best brands in the world.”
“The result is a format that delivers a consistent, compatible consumer experience across a range of platforms, which is clearly something that resonates with consumers.”
