Amazon Game Studios has announced that it's working on a new free-to-play MMO set in the Lord of the Rings universe.

You may remember that Athlon Games announced last year that it was working with an unnanounced 'partner developer' on a triple-A, free-to-play MMO set in the Tolkein universe of the books, and last night Amazon Game Studios announced themselves as the partner with their own press release.

Amazon Game Studios will handle publishing duties on console and PC, except in China where that will be handled by Athlon Games' parent company Leyou. The company is keen to point out in their press release that the game will not have any ties to the Amazon Studios produced TV series based on the fantasy world of LOTR, however.

No word on release dates or specifically which formats the game will release on, but expect to see the Lord of the Rings MMO 'on console and PC' at some point in the future.
