It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney is set to direct the Minecraft movie, Mojang has announced.

“Some of you may have seen this guy hanging around MINECON in London a couple weeks ago. He’s Rob McElhenney, and he’s going to be directing the upcoming Minecraft movie,” announced the Minecraft maker on its blog.

McElhenney added on Twitter: “Hey @Mojang let’s do something strange and wonderful.”

Although recognisable by many as Mac on Always Sunny, McElhenney is somewhat of a newbie director having helmed just three episodes of the hit sitcom and a TV movie.

Announced last year, the live action Minecraft movie comes from Warner Bros, with Roy Lee producing the film via his Vertigo Entertainment production company. Lee achieved huge success with the LEGO Movie and Warner is hoping for similar success from Minecraft.
