Aion, the MMO released under NCsoft, will be adopting a free-to-play model this February.
The Korean MMO launched in September 2009 under a traditional subscription model, however it will be making the move to free-to-play as part of a partnership between NCsoft and Gameforge, with a total of 38 employees working on continuing to take care of the game in Europe.
Writing in an open letter on the official Aion website, the Gameforge Aion team stated the change-over in business models is due to a low number of users in the game.
“Why are we switching to free-to-play? In the last few months the lands in Atreia have become more and more deserted. We want to reinvigorate the world of Aion and attract new adventurers to the towns to take to the skies as Daevas.”
Aion joins many MMOs over the past year which have adopted a free-to-play model in order to keep afloat in the market.
