Microsoft has confirmed that the upcoming Age of Empires Online is set to be released August 16.
The free-to-play online RTS will feature two playable civilisations at launch, the Egyptians and the Greeks, along with “more than 40 hours of free gameplay” according to the Age of Empires Online website.
Players will also be able to purchase Premium Civilisation upgrades with real world money, which can unlock all of a civilisation’s abilities at once, as well as special abilities available on its tech tree called “star techs”.
The game will be made available via retail and AgeofEmpiresOnline.com.
The game has had a rocky development period, having been passed between a number of different studios, so it will be good to see the game finally come to fruition. Whether or not the dev switch will impact the quality of the title remains to be seen.
