Funcom has released its Q1 2009 financial report, reporting earnings of $7.7 million, with an operating profit of $1.5 million.

The report also states that the seemingly struggling MMO, Age of Conan, has taken a turn for the better, with an increase in new players leading to a healthier subscriber base.

“Improved subscriber retention for Age of Conan and a significant increase in new customers in Q1 compared to Q4 has led to a stable and solid subscriber base during the first 4 and a half months of 2009,” stated Funcom. “The average player also spends more time in the game.”

Funcom also noted that its recently launched Age of Conan free trial has shown “encouraging” conversion rates from trials to paying subscribers, but points to the initial large client download as a limiter. It added that reducing the size of this download is a “key focus” for the company.
