Sonic Team announced at SXSW (via PCGamesN) over the weekend that it's beavering away on a brand new Sonic the Hedgehog game.

Speaking during a panel at the event, studio boss Takashi Iizuka revealed that the team has 'begun production' on the Blue Blur's next outing, although it's obvious right now that the game probably won't be out this year.

Iizuka-san added that Sonic Team 'will be excited to share more news with you in the future, but for now, thank you for your patience until we have something to show.' Quite when that will be is anyone's guess, but it's been two years since the last Sonic games were released, so we're long overdue for a new entry.

In case you forgot, those games were Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces, the former being by far the best of the bunch

In the meantime, Team Sonic Racing is the next title from the spiky speedster in the pipeline, and launches for PlayStation 4, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One on May 21.
