Yesterday, in a post titled ‘The Tru7h About Co-Op in Halo 3’, Bungie announced that Halo 3 won’t include two-player online co-op, but something a whole lot cooler: 4-player co-op throughout the game’s campaign mode.

So you were probably wondering why we didn’t want to commit to two player co-op online over Xbox Live,” says Bungie’s Luke Smith. “We certainly got plenty of mail asking, no, demanding that we make it happen. Of course we were working on it, but we were also working on something better. Not two player co-op. Not three-player co-op, but up to four player co-op. Online. On Xbox Live, or sure, System Link if you prefer.

In addition to the four-player variety over LIVE or system link, two players will be able to tackle the action with a split-screen, evening joining up with another split-screen pair for some 4-player action.

So why the secrecy and apparent uncertainly over this exciting game mode? “We wanted to make sure all our “t”s were crossed and our “i”s dotted before unveiling this important new part of Halo 3’s Campaign mode,” said Smith.

We already knew that Halo 3 would see the Arbiter fighting alongside Master Chief, but 4-player co-op meant that two new characters were needed. Bungie decided to take this opportunity to expand the Halo universe a little, introducing two brand-new Elite characters: N’tho ‘Sraom and Usze ‘Taham.

You’ll find a brief bio on each of the new characters over on Bungie.net.

Halo 3 is scheduled for release only for Xbox 360 in the US on September 25 and across Europe on September 26.
