Some early shots of Nintendo 3DS games have impressed – especially Capcom’s Resident Evils and Konami’s Metal Gear Solid – but Epic Games, creator of the hugely popular Unreal Engine, believes the new handheld isn’t powerful enough to utilise its tech.
Speaking to Joystiq at GDC Online, Epic Games vice president Mark Rein revealed he thinks the 3DS is below Unreal Engine’s minimum specification.
“It’s below our [minimum specifications], from what we can tell. We don’t have a 3DS, so there’s no way for us to verify that,” he explained, “but everything we’ve been led to believe is that it’s below our min-spec. You couldn’t do a game that looks like [Epic Citadel] on it, for example.”
It’s a surprising statement given that Epic Citadel runs remarkably well on older generation Apple devices including the iPhone 3GS.
He added: “We really don’t know enough about it to make a formal comment, but I think if they [Nintendo] considered that our engine would be good on it, they would have probably talked to us about it.”
Rein wouldn’t rule out ever working on the 3DS, adding that the situation could change when the studio gets its hands on the real hardware.
