Digital Extremes project director Sheldon Carter has confirmed that publisher 2K approached the studio with an opportunity to develop The Darkness II, but would not elaborate on whether original Darkness developer Starbreeze ever had any involvement with the project.

2K confirmed the existence of the game back in January, but there has been no information why Starbreeze Studios isn’t involved.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com, Carter said: “2K actually approached us with a plan and they kind of said what they wanted.

“They had an idea of what they wanted to do with the Darkness franchise – they already had Paul Jenkins, which is awesome. Paul wrote the first game and has written the comics, and he’s also writing this game. For us it just worked out perfectly: we got this project with a great writer and a great story.”

Did 2K initially approach Starbreeze Studios, however? “I have no idea,” said Carter.

Starbreeze has been repeatedly rumoured to be working with EA to revive the much-loved Syndicate series, though there’s been no official confirmation on this.

VideoGamer.com awarded The Darkness a respectable 8/10 way back in 2007, and recently got to see a demonstration of the upcoming sequel.

The Darkness II is scheduled for release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in autumn 2011
