More than 20 million map packs for Call of Duty: Black Ops have been sold during the first nine months of 2011, Activision revealed last night during an earnings call.

So successful has the DLC been, that digital revenue alone makes it the third biggest title of the year so far.

“Year-to-date, Call of Duty: Black Ops has been a driving force behind both retail and digital sales,” said Eric Hirshberg, chief executive officer of Activision Publishing Unit. “For the first nine months of the year, Black Ops has remained #1 title in US and Europe, generating more revenue than any new major console release. In addition to retail sales, Call of Duty: Black Ops has sold more than 20 million Map Packs. The revenues generated from Map Packs alone would make it the third largest console title of the year.”

Hirshberg also pointed to the success of the fourth Map Pack, released during the September quarter, as a positive sign for Call of Duty: Elite.

“In the September quarter, we released a fourth Map Pack, something we’ve never done before. And not only did it positively impact our quarterly results, but it further demonstrates that there is continued consumer interest in the content even 11 months after the launch, making playing Call of Duty truly a year-round activity for millions of our fans,” he said. This should bode well for Call of Duty Elite, a key feature of which is providing a constant stream of new digital playable content to our fans throughout the year.”

This year’s entry in the Call of Duty franchise, Modern Warfare 3, is out now, and millions are already playing.
