1UP reports on a Japanese press event, at which Virtua Tennis 3 was on show and apparently running in 1080p. Although Sony has previously declared that 1080p is the only true high definition format, the majority of titles heading for the console’s launch look to be maxing out at 720p.

While Virtua Tennis 3 isn’t a launch title, the launch line-up should have at least one 1080p game. A Sony rep talking to GamePro has stated that Resistance: Fall of Man from Insomniac is being targeted as a 1080p title.

Right now the game is at 720p and we are aiming to have it reach 1080p by the time the game is wrapped,” said the spokesperson.

Though unlikely to benefit even those with HD displays (1080p displays are very much in the minority), merely being able to render the game in 1080p would be a feather in Sony’s cap.
