Interplay’s newly resurrected Black Isle Studios is to make new instalments of the studio’s intellectual property, the company has said.
Black Isle oversaw a string of PC RPG hits in the 90s and early 00s, developing Fallout, Fallout 2, Planescape Torment, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale II and Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance II. Many of the original Black Isle team went on to form Obsidian Entertainment.
But the long-dormant Black Isle Studios sprang to life yesterday with the emergence of a website, Facebook profile and Twitter page. The company is owned by Interplay, who was last seen losing the rights to publish a Fallout MMO to Bethesda.
Speaking on the announcement, Interplay boss Herve Caen said “it really feels like getting the band back together as we’re seeing opportunities not available to us before. Given our unique position, expanding online and mobile platforms, and renewed interest in our proven properties, I see an incredible success potential for Black Isle Studios.”
Interplay hopes to use Black Isle Studios as a way to attract “the best talent”, but so far it is unclear who of the original ‘band’ is currently at the studio.
Even Interplay founder Brian Fargo, who recently launched a successful Kickstar campaign to reboot classic RPG Wasteland, was in the dark “I just read that Interplay is bringing back Black Isle. Hmmm… Not enough info for me to comment,” he said on Twitter.
