Following in the mighty footsteps of Argonaut founder Jez San (OBE in 2002), legendary game designer and master of hyperbole, Peter Molyneux has been made an OBE in this years New Year Honours list, issued by the Queen. The brains behind titles such as Populous, Syndicate, Black and White and, most recently, Fable was awarded the title for services to the computer games industry.
The Queen may have chosen to overlook the rubbishness of Black and White when making her decision, instead remembering her love of the flame thrower in Syndicate and the little people who were sick when you over-salted the fries in Theme Park. Speaking to the BBC, a remarkably subdued Molyneux said that the award had come completely “out of the blue” and that he was totally surprised by it.
Regardless of your opinion of him, an award like this can only be a good thing for an industry that, in terms of public recognition, remains vastly overshadowed by its elder cousins in film and music. Here’s hoping for a Sir Jaz Rignall…
