Microsoft has named its new London studio, Lift London, Phil Harrison, corporate vice president at Microsoft EMEA announced today.

“I wanted to create, from scratch, a 21st century studio – not a studio that would make retail games – but a studio that would make games for the cloud,” said Harrison.

“I wanted to put together the most incredible talent for the studio.”

Harrison added: “The shift is from packaged goods to connected products. We will continue to support retail with our products for sure. But we are going to keep creating features that are enhanced and improved by the network.

“Moving from being the maker of packaged products to the operator of connected services.”

Lift London is headed up by Lee Schuneman who had been with Microsoft-owned Rare for the last 16 years. Core senior staff have been hired, joined by indie micro-studio Dlala.

The studio will focus on cloud gaming for tablet devices, although not limited to Microsoft devices.

“We care about our platforms, and will focus on Microsoft, but we will always be open to looking at other platforms,” explained Schuneman.
