Lord of the Rings Online developer Turbine has revealed that the fantasy MMO has seen its revenues triple since adopting a free-to-play model last year.
Not only is the game now making more money, but the game’s online population has also grown.
“We are super-pleased with how so many of our players have responded fantastically… the world feels alive and vibrant,” executive producer Kate Paiz told TenTonHammer.
“This really echoes a lot of what we’ve seen throughout the entertainment industry in general. It’s really about letting players make their choices about how they play.”
In addition to the free-to-play model, Turbine also offers standard and premium subscriptions at a cost and sells in-game currency.

The success of Lord of the Rings Online could pave the way for even more pay-to-play titles to make the transition. Cryptic is already planning on turning its super hero MMO, Champions Online, into a freemium game, and Star Trek Online could follow suit.
