Apple’s new iOS 8 SDK promises to deliver “console-class 3D games to mobile devices” powered by the A7 chip (iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina Display, and iPhone 5s).
The new SDK introduces Metal, a new graphics technology that maximizes the performance of the A7 chip and Swift, a powerful new programming language.
Metal promises a “dramatic 10 times improvement in draw call speed” which Apple says “enables leading game providers for the first time to bring console-class 3D games to mobile devices”.
The first example of the improved graphics power comes from Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 demo ‘Zen Garden’. For a mobile title the visuals are extremely impressive, and you’ll be able to see for yourself when the app launches following the public launch of iOS 8.
