SEGA has announced that Sonic is returning to consoles in an all-new adventure, only this time it’s in 2D. And not just classic 2D visuals, but HD.

The new game, currently in development under the code-name Project Needlemouse, will debut in 2010 on consoles – exactly which hasn’t been announced. Details are scarce, but an all new trailer (found on GameSpot) states “Speed returns in an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up”.

Speaking to GameSpot, SEGA associate brand manager, Ken Balough said the game’s concept was a response to “old-school Sonic fans”.
