Tanking is a very strong playstyle in Throne and Liberty, with players tanking dungeons for end-game gear. Moreso, players in PvP can use tanks to create strong bulwarks at the front taking damage or protecting key allies in the fight. In addition, tanking is important for PvE to have a defensive character able to get aggro and absorb the hits to progress to bosses for loot. If you’re the type of player who likes tanking from other MMOs, then here’s a closer look at the Throne and Liberty tank build, featuring a Sword and Shield, potential weapon combos, stats, gear and more. We’ll detail the Greatsword and Sword and Shield build, followed by the Sword and Shield and Wand and Tome build. You’ll find some really good PvE and PvP builds that rank well in many Throne and Liberty weapon tier lists.
Throne and Liberty Tank Build
As stated, the key to playing a tank build in Throne and Libverty is the Sword and Shield weapon. The weapon is dedicated to granting the main ways to taunt enemies, and buff your defensive capabilities. To operate as a tank, you will need to use the following skills:
- Shield Strike – Deals 580% base damage + 129. Weakens the target with a chance to lower their hit rating by 250 for 6s. Furthermore, the chance of heavy attack increased by 50, per 1% of Shield Block Chance. When counter-attacking with a counter barrier, Shield Strike’s cooldown is lowered by 1.3 seconds and the target’s aggression increases.
- Strategic Rush – Charge 5 times the distance of the attack range of your weapon in a direction and deal 280% base damage + 150 up to five targets, with a chance to apply Collision: Push. Targets affected are stunned for 2 seconds if they are pushed into a wall. Those immune to collisions take an additional 40 damage for 6 seconds.
- Counter Barrier – Increases Shield Block Chance stat by 34% for 6s. On evading an attack using Shield Block, or blocking with a Defense skill within 1.5 times the attack range, performs a counterattack that deals damage equal to 500% of Damage Reduction to the attacker. The counterattack does not affect critical hit and heavy attack chance.
- Shield Throw – Throw a shield 5 times the distance of your attack range in the selected direction. The shield deals 340% base damage to all target hits before returning to the player. The first skill used after using the skill has its Heavy Attack hit chance increased by 100. Also increases the target’s aggression.
- Stalwart Bastion – Increases damage reduction by 103 for 9s for you and your party within 10m.
- Chain Hook – Has an 80% chance to apply Collison: Pull. Pulls the target towards you and Binds them for 3. When used on a boss or monster immune, you pull yourself towards them.
- Provoking Roar – 70% chance to apply Weaken: Provoke on 6 enemies within 3 meters for 4.8 seconds against players or 7.2s against Monsters. Provoked targets direct their attacks towards you.
- Immortal Pride – Max Health and Current Health increased by 30% for 6s, and current health increased by the max health bonus amount.
As you can see, lots of S+S skills are crucial for a tank build in Throne and Liberty. You get the tools you need to tank, featuring taunts, charges, pulls, threat generation, AOE damage, and more.
In terms of passive to focus on from this weapon, you want:
- Impenetrable – Increases defence proportional to the amount of enemies within a 9m radius of you. 299 if there are 2 or less, 400 for 3-6, and 872 for 7+.
- Aegis Shield – increase Def by 9.6 per 1% of Shield block Chance.
- Spectrum of Agony – Hitting a provoked target increases its provoke length by 0.4s. Also deals damage equal to 72% of base damage + 37 to all targets within 3m of the target.
- Morale Boost – 14% cooldown reduction to all skills when colliding with a target with another skill. Each collision applies a further 7% stacking up to three times.
- Resilient Mind – Evading an attack restores mana by 46.3. Each shield block or defence block restores mana by 35.7% of the damage blocked. Also restores 21 health.
You can swap the fourth or 5th option around, depending on your CDR or need for mana. Whichever you seem to be lacking the most in your build at various points of end-game gearing.
Sword and Shield + Great Sword build
While the Sword and Shield still have a few skills left for your bar, which come from weapon combos. There are two weapon combos types you can play: Greatsword or Wand and Tome.
If you’re playing Greatsword, then you have a few skills that help you out.
- There’s Precision Dash for another movement skill, which increases your heavy atk chance.
- Valiant Brawl for for a multi hit attack or an AOE. It also has synergy with heavy attacks lowering its cooldown, hence why you take the charge, and combo it with shield throw before using this skill for the most heavy attack hit modifiers.
- Devastating Tornado is another AOE skill that players use for ramping their damage and movement speed. Plus you do a lot of AOE over the course of your spins.
- The other skill you want is DaVinci’s Courage, as that is a party buff granting increased max health, health regen, and attack speed to all party members for 12s in a 15-meter range.
The Greatsword build offers you plenty of heavy attacks and damage modifiers. If you want to drop the Tornado attack, you can instead get the Stunning Blow attack which has a chance to stun foes. It gives you more control over adds or for tanking in PvP.
As for the passives from the Greatsword, you want to take the following
- Robust Constiution – Health Regen increased by 84. Max Health increased by 2150, and Recovery Health Crystal by 6%.
- Indomitable Armor – Has an 80% chance to increase Defence to all weapon type for 3s by 336 for 2 on being hit. Stacks up to three times.
- Victor’s Morale – Restore 17 health and 28 mana when hitting enemies with skills.
They take the tanky side of the Greatsword to grant you better base stats for tanking It’s also a good way of getting a short amount of mana back, since the build lacks mana for the most part as it’s not that valuable of a stat.
As for items, we recommend taking the Magna Duke Taunting Balde, as that greatsword grants you the chance to grant Weaken: Provoke to target shit with Valiant Brawl. You can also take Ahzreil’s Demonic Blade for mana restoration with Shield Throw. Again, more mana generation to sustain your build.
As for stat priority:
- You want to grab
- Health
- Endurance
- Heavy attack chance
- Debuff duration
- Buff duration
You also want the following attribute spread:
- 70 Strength
- 30 Dex
- 20 Wisdom
- 30 Perception.
You’ll get most of your stats from gear. But, while levelling, place around 20 in strength, 10 in dex, and the remaining points in Perception to increase your hit chance. The rest of your stats come from gear.
Sword and Shield + Wand and Tome build
However, if you don’t want the full martial playstyle, you can go Wand and Tome. The key thing about this weapon is that you drop some party defensive buffs and additional heavy attack synergy. Instead, you get plenty of party and self-healing. This makes you more like a Cleric role, and this is a fairly popular build for tanking in PvP.
If you use the Wand and Tome, skills you’re looking at are things like:
- Swift Healing – Heals friendly targets by 610% base damage. Can be used up to wimes with mana cost increasing per cost.
- Clay’s Salvation – Restore health to all party members within range proportional to 520% base damage + 469.
- Blessed Barrier – select a target ally in your party and buff their decisiveness to all damage types by 2100 for 6s. Heals to that target also increase by 48% during the day. At night you get increased endurance by 480.
- Cursed Nightmare: 80% chance to apply a 30% attack and movement speed debuff to enemies hit. It can also apply a sleep to the target for 6 seconds afterwards or 15.6 to monsters. Hitting an enemy asleep will crit them and wake them up.
The idea behind the Wand and Tome is to provide yourself with some strong self-healing tools. Furthermore, you help heal the party, which is strong in PvP. As for controlling tools, you get the Cursed Nightmare to set a target to sleep, alongside debuffing them as a defensive tool. Again, this is handy for most of PvE and PvP situations.
This is supported by the passives, which are as follows:
- Full of Corruption – When a weakend target dies, Mana regen increased by 70 and max damage by 40 for 9 seconds. Stack 3 times.
- Devotion and Emptiness – Skill Heal and Skill Cooldown improvements during the day. At night, skill damage over time and curse skill cooldown improved.
- Saint’s Oath – On taking skill damage, 10% chance to apply Amitol’s Heal. This increases your incoming heal, recovery, and skill heal by 18% for 3, stacking up to 10 times.
- Noble Revival – Skill heal increased by 3.02% per 1000 max mana.
The last two passives are gear-dependent or PvP-based. You may want to consider adding two more passives from the Sword and Shield in the meantime if you don’t want to use them.
Now, when it comes to gearing, you may want to use the Tevant’s Cuneiform Bone. This grants a new curse to a target that deals 35% damage over 30s. The Touch of Deep Desire wand is also fine, as it can roll health and heavy attack change but has no perks.
As for your sword and shield, there’s Chernobog’s Beheading Sword, which can apply a sleeping curse to targets. More synergy for your curse builds. If you can farm T2 weapons, then there’s Purgatory’s Lethal Claw, which grants incoming heal increased by 30% during Counter Barrier.
As for your stat priority, you need
- Mana
- Mana regen
- Health
- Health regen
- Evasion
- Debuff duration
Your attribute should also have around 60-70 strength, 30 dex, 30 wisdom and 20 perception. The points depend on gearing and attribute placement at the end-game.
