If you’re wondering how to save in Starfield, we’re going to go over everything you need to know.

Starfield is Bethesda’s latest game, introducing a new IP to their collection for the first time in nearly quarter of a century. No longer are their games fantasy exploration or apocalyptic wasteland as Elder Scrolls and Fallout were – now BGS are taking us interplanetary.

Starfield, like most other games, makes use of game saves. However, as it’s an RPG, you’re going to want to be extra sure that you have saved before exiting the game. Otherwise, you’re running the risk of losing progress, which is going to be especially annoying when you’re exploring the depths of space. Here’s how to save in Starfield.

How to save in Starfield

Here’s how to save in Starfield, which is actually a lot easier than you might think.

  • Hit Escape, or Start on your keyboard or controller
  • Choose Quicksave or Save

In most cases – you should be choosing the regular Save function. Especially if you’re approaching a key moment in the game or similar, you’re going to want to use the regular mode. This is as Quicksaves are much more likely to corrupt. Alongside that, quicksaves will automatically overwrite the previous, whereas you can keep multiple different ‘regular saves’ that may have captured different moments in your gameplay.

Does Starfield have an auto-save function?

Starfield actually does have an auto-save function, as other games in the Bethesda suite have all had. However, you might be wondering when exactly the game will autosave?

  • Starfield will autosave when you complete quest objectives
  • When you exit your ship
  • When you enter new areas (planets/space/dungeons/etc)

Can you overwrite saves in Starfield?

You should be able to overwrite saves in Starfield, as this is a fairly common feature to be included in games.
