There are two ways to get PlayStation Stars points: complete campaigns or buy eligible games on the PlayStation Store while having an active PlayStation Plus subscription. These points can then be used to redeem PS Store wallet funds, games, and if you’re partial to worthless digitized tat, digital collectibles.
Like pretty much every loyalty program under the sun, PlayStation Stars is a shiny, well-marketed con to get you to spend more money. Free is free though, and there’s no harm in picking up the odd wallet top up as long as you don’t spend more than you usually would.
Earn PlayStation Stars points through Campaigns
The best way to get PlayStation Stars points without spending any cash is to complete campaigns. These are rotating, time-limited challenges and activities that are either available to all PlayStation Stars members or tailored to you specifically.
These come in all shapes and sizes, but typically require that you play a specified game. For example the Multiplayer Mayhem campaign will earn you 50 points if you play either Rocket League, Final Fantasy XIV, Ark: Survival Evolved, or DayZ.
PlayStation Plus members also have access to exclusive subscriber campaigns. These include, for example, trying out a PS Plus Catalogue game from a defined list or loading up one of that specific month’s PS Plus monthly free games.
To check what campaigns are available and to start one, go to the PlayStation Stars tab on the PlayStation App, select Campaigns, click on the one you’re interested in and tap Start. Note that not all campaigns reward points, so be sure to check before taking one on as some grant limited-edition digital collectibles instead.
Purchase eligible games on the PlayStation Store
The second way to earn PlayStation Plus points is to make purchases on the PlayStation Store. You’ll need to have an active PlayStation Plus subscription and be signed in at the time of purchase to get the points reward.
Eligible purchases include everything (including games, add-ons, DLC, and monthly subscription payments for PS Plus) other than PSN Wallet top ups, physical discs, consoles, accessories, and gift cards. Though points rewards vary, the general rule is that you’ll get 10 points per $1 spent.
Points expire
Per the PlayStation Stars FAQ, ‘points earned will expire at the end of the month plus 24 months from the date on which they appear in your PlayStation Stars account balance.’ Best to use them regularly to not miss out then.
