How to expand your borders in Pioneers of Pagonia

There are several steps involved in extending your territory in Pioneers of Pagonia, which roughly break down as follows:

  • Build an Explorer’s Hut to explore unknown terrain.
  • Build a Guard Tower to extend your territory using guards.
  • Build a Quarry to break and mine stone.
  • Build a Stone Mason to shape stone into Border Stones.

Explorer’s Hut

When loading up a new game, one of the first tasks is to build an Explorer’s Hut as close to your existing border as possible. Once built and manned, the Explorer’s Hut sends out Explorers to explore unknown parts of the map. They’ll head for the fogged areas of the map. This is important because Guard Tower guards can only expand your borders in known parts of the Pioneers of Pagonia map – those not covered by fog.

Later on, you can also build Garrisons, which act as a souped up version of Guard Towers that can send out more guards to extend your border, albeit at a higher construction cost.

✓ Tip

Check how much of the map you’ve explored

Though you can get a visual sense of how much of the map you’ve explored by looking at the mini-map in the left-hand bottom corner of your screen, you can also see it in a numerical form. Click on the Island icon in the top-left of your screen, then tick the Explored Area option. You’ll then see how much you’ve explored in percentage form.

Guard Tower

After the Explorer’s Hut, build a Guard Tower. Guards assigned to the tower will then set out to any borders within the influence zone of the Guard Tower (click on the Guard Tower to see the zone) and use Border Stones to extend your territory. When you start a new game, you’ll have a set stock of border stones, which run out rather quickly as your Guards push the borders further afield into the map, which is where the next two steps come in.

You can also define where you want your Guards to expand your territory. Select a Guard Tower, then click the Set Claim Focus Point button, which is to the right of the Orders section and represented by an arrow aimed at two flat circles, then select the spot where you want the Guards to focus their attention.

Due to the set radius around each Guard Tower, you’ll hit a point where they can no longer extend your territory. When this happens, delete the Guard Tower and rebuild it as close as possible to your new borders.

Quarry and Stone Mason

Guards need Border Stones to extend your territory in Pioneers of Pagonia. To produce Border Stones, you’ll need a Quarry built in the vicinity of stone rocks (again click on the Quarry to see its reach and make sure it covers a few stone rocks) and a Stone Mason to shape the stone into Border Stones. Carriers will then carry Border Stones to Guard Towers for guards to use. We recommend constructing the Quarry and Stone Mason in proximity to one another to cut down on carrier travel times and speed up production of Border Stones.

That’s pretty much the gist of how to extend your territory in Pioneers of Pagonia. Keep Border Stone stocks up and keep moving your Guard Towers forward as you claim more territory. Before long you’ll have claimed all available land on the map.
